A triptych of drawings of a butt and ben house, the butt end for cooking, the Ben end for sleeping.
The Butt and Ben highland home was,for the most part, constructed with turf or of wattle
and daub. The sleeping quarters.. where the family lived and cooked had a
ground area of about 12 foot square. The smoking hearth was located in the
centre, or the gable end. There was no chimney. The rest of the homestead
was occupied by cattle. The cattle had the same access to the
building as the family. The family saw "butt" to the cattle's area - The Cattle
faced the family looking "Ben" to the homestead. The description of these houses were then simplified to - Butt and Ben.
